LTI Korea is thrilled to unveil our latest exhibition - "Springing to Life: A Celebration of Korean Literature that's Captivating the World"! Explore the award-winning works of 11 acclaimed Korean authors at Starfield Library, COEX in Seoul.

Here's the scoop:
Dates: April 18 - May 12, 2024
Venue: Starfield Library, COEX, Gangnam, Seoul
Authors: 11 Korean writers and poets, including Kim Young-ha, Keum Suk Gendry-Kim, Kim Choyeop, Kim Hyesoon, Yeong-shin Ma, and others
Special Talk: Hear from Han Kang about her award-winning book "We Do No Part" (Impossible adieux) on May 10!

Plus, a chance to WIN a signed book!

Did you know LTI Korea's library holds a piece of literary history: the very first French translation of a Korean literary work, Printemps parfumé (lit. Spring Perfume/Fragrance of Spring)! 📚

This beautiful 1892 book is the first French version of Chunhyangjeon (lit. The Tale of Chunhyang). Translated by J. H. Rosny (with help from Hong Jong-ju) and published by E. Dentu as part of its part of the Petite collection Guillaume series in 1892, it features exquisite illustrations by Marold and Mittis. ✨

We were honored to welcome Her Excellency Sara Solís Castañeda, the Guatemalan Ambassador to South Korea, to our library today, where she stopped by after her meeting with the President of LTI Korea to admire this precious work of art.

(But why would the Guatemalan Ambassador be interested in a French translation of a Korean book? 👀 I’ll spill the beans in the comments if there's enough interest!)

Huge congratulations to the brilliant Poet Kim Hyesoon and her translator Don Mee Choi!

Kim's collection "Phantom Pain Wings" (ndpublishing, 2023) has won the prestigious National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry (bookcritics). This makes Kim the first Korean poet to receive this major US literary honor.

"Phantom Pain Wings" marks Kim's 40th anniversary as a poet and was translated into English by the renowned Korean American poet and translator Don Mee Choi. The collection stood out among an incredibly competitive finalist list.

This is a monumental achievement and well-deserved recognition for Kim's searing, visceral poetry and Choi's masterful translation bringing these vital works to English readers. Their artistic collaboration has created something truly special.

○ 대상: 문학 부문 국내 출판사 및 에이전시, 문화콘텐츠 부문 웹툰·영화 등 분야의 기업 및 민간 단체

Han Kang's "Impossibles adieux" (tr. Kyungran Choi & Pierre Bisiou, Grasset, 2023) wins Émile Guimet Prize for Asian Literature presented by museeguimet. 🏆

Han Kang's powerful novel exploring the Jeju April 3rd Incident was praised for its universal themes and restrained emotion.

The prize's Fiction shortlist also included India's Salman Rushdie and Japan's Akiko Kawasaki. In the Graphic Novel category, Yeong-Shin Ma's "Les Daronnes" (Mothers) was shortlisted but lost out to "Le fils de Taiwan" by Yu Pei-Yun and Zhou Jian-Xi.

Han Kang's writing shines as a global literary treasure thanks to her talented translators. The English translation "Impossible Goodbyes" (tr. Emily Yae Won, Paige Morris) is forthcoming from Hamish Hamilton, US and Hogarth, UK.

Han Kang and her excellent translators continue bringing impactful Korean stories to the world. We eagerly await more accolades! 👏
