Sustained Efforts to Promote Korean Literature in Translation Culminate in Nobel Prize Win

LTI Korea’s Support Results in 76 Translations of Han Kang’s Works Across 28 Languages



On October 10, the literary world celebrated a historic milestone: Han Kang became the first Korean writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. This achievement follows her recent wins of the prestigious Prix Médicis and Prix Émile Guimet for Asian Literature in France, further cementing Korea’s place in the global literary landscape. The Nobel Committee praised her work for its “intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.”

This landmark recognition is a testament to the sustained efforts of the Literature Translation Institute of Korea (LTI Korea), a government-funded organization dedicated to promoting Korean literature worldwide.

With LTI Korea’s support, Han Kang’s works have been translated into 28 languages, resulting in 76 books published globally. Notably, works such as The Vegetarian (tr. Deborah Smith), which won the Man Booker International Prize, and Impossibles adieux (tr. Kyungran Choi, Pierre Bisiou), recipient of both the Prix Médicis and Prix Émile Guimet for Asian Literature, have garnered significant attention and showcased the originality and depth of Korean literature to international audiences.


LTI Korea’s Persistent Efforts Yield Global Recognition


Since its establishment in 1996, LTI Korea has worked tirelessly to bring Korean literature to the global stage, supporting the publication of 2,171 works in 44 languages. Han Kang’s Nobel Prize win is both a result of these efforts and a symbolic moment proving that Korean literature is resonating with readers worldwide. Her works, translated into various languages, including German, English, and French, have received enthusiastic responses in literary circles across nations, generating significant interest in the international literary market.


Korean Literature Grows Closer to Global Readers


This award is expected to further increase global interest in Korean literature. LTI Korea plans to continue its support in translating works by Korean authors into more languages and facilitating communication with readers worldwide. Han Kang’s Nobel Prize win is not just an individual achievement but a significant milestone that will draw greater attention to Korean literature as a whole.

LTI Korea President Sooyoung Chon stated, “Han Kang’s Nobel Prize in Literature is a pivotal moment that highlights LTI Korea’s efforts to introduce Korean literature to the world. We will continue to work hard to ensure that more Korean literary works are translated into various languages and introduced to a global audience.”
