Doch mittlerweile ist das „Hallyu“-Phänomen, die „Koreanische Welle“, an alle Küsten der Welt geschwappt. Da denke man an den Erfolg des K-Pop, an den Vierfach-Triumph von „Parasite“ (Regie: Bong Joon-ho) bei den Oscars 2020 oder an den aktuellen Hype um die Netflix-Serie „Squid Game“ (Regie: Hwang Dong-hyuk). In this best-selling Korean novella, recently translated into English by Jamie Chang, Kim Hye-jin offers us the perspective of a Korean mother. It’s narrated entirely from the perspective of a woman of around 60 who has a daughter in her thirties and focuses on her inability to understand what her daughter, Green, wants from life and why she’s decided to live openly as a lesbian with her partner Lane:nbsp; “Gay? The word rushes into my head and shoots through without permission. Words come to me so violently, without warning, before Lane can say another word, I quickly manage to correct her. My daughter is not that kind of person.”nbsp;

She does not leave her world to look for hope, but instead she finds love in people at the cusp of desolation. She tells us to come take a look here with her. A world that people turn away from because of its stench, noise, and ugliness is for Kim a world to explore to find people who thrive in the darkest place. She tells us that here, you will also find an ageless soil called love that these people till. This is what makes the love story in Central Station particularly special. The more they become abstract, tainted, and pitiful, the higher their story of love rises above the world of senses to grab our attention.
