김언수 작가 프랑스 브리브 도서전 참가 및 파리 한국문학 행사 개최

○ 한국문학번역원(원장 김사인)은 오는 11월 9일부터 13일까지 최근 프랑스에서 단편집 『잽(Jab !)』을 출간한 김언수 작가의 브리브 도서전(Foire du livre de Brive) 참가 및 파리 문학행사 개최를 지원한다. ○ 브리브 도서전은 1973년 처음 개최된 이후 프랑스를 대표하는 도서 축제로 자리매김하였으며, 매년 프랑스 중부에 위치한 브리브 라 가야르드(Brive La Gaillarde)에서 열린다. 2018년 제 37회 브리브 도서전은 11월 9일(금)부터 11일(일)까지 프랑스 소설가 델핀 드 비강(Delphine de Vigan)의 주재 하에 개최되며, 한국에서도 잘 알려진 아멜리 노통(Amlie Nothomb), 베르나르 베르베르(Bernard Werber) 등을 포함한 프랑스 및 해외 작가 300여명 이상이 참가할 예정이다. ○ 김언수 작가는 도서전 행사로 11월 10일(토)에 세계의 문학((Littrature du monde entier)이라는 주제로 스페인어권 작가인 막심 우에르따(Maxim Huerta)와 대담을 나누며, 11월 12일(월) 에는 파리 주프랑스 한국문화원에서 낭독회, 11월 13일(화)에는 프랑스 국립 동양학대학에서 한국학 및 동양학 수강생들을 대상으로 강연 행사 등을 가질 예정이다. ○ 『잽』은 프랑스 세르주 사프란 출판사(Serge Safran Editeur)를 통해 2018년 10월 출간되었으며, 소설집에는 표제작인 「잽」외에 「금고에 갇히다」, 「꽃을 말리는 건, 우리가 하찮아졌기 때문이다」, 「참 쉽게 배우는 글짓기 교실」, 「소파 이야기」, 「하구」 등 총 6편의 단편이 수록되었다. 작품의 번역은 제10회 한국문학번역상 대상을 수상한 전문 번역가 최미경(이화여대 통번역대학원 교수), 장 노엘 쥬떼와 한국문학번역원 번역아카데미에 참여하는 번역자들의 공동 작업으로 이루어졌다. ○ 한편 『잽』 의 프랑스 현지 출간 이후 프랑스의 주요 일간지와 문학 매체들에서 작가와 작품에 주목하였다. 리베라시옹(Libration)지는 상세 서평과 함께 말린 꽃과 소파, 루저들의 이야기가 있는 현대사회의 해학이 담긴 소설집이라 평하며, 작가가 작품들을 통해금붕어처럼 살지 말아라, 어항보다는 아쿠아리움을 찾아가라는 메시지를 주고 있다고 덧붙였다. 또한 벨기에의 브뤼셀 컬쳐(Bruxelles Culture) 지는 복수의 정신으로 살아 움직이는 등장인물들의 일상생활을 엿볼 수 있는 단편집이라 말하며 비교적 짧은 분량의 이야기들에 생명을 불어넣는 작가 특유의 유머와 탁월한 재능을 발견할 수 있다고 호평하였다. ○ 김언수 작가는 2016년 소설 『설계자들(Les Planificateurs)』로 프랑스 추리문학대상 후보에 오르는 등 프랑스 현지의 좋은 평가를 받았으며 그 밖에도 소설 『캐비닛(Le Placard)』, 단편 『금고에 갇히다(Prisonniers de la chambre forte)』등이 프랑스어로 번역‧소개 된 바 있다.

Upon finishing Un-su Kim’s The Cabinet, one might well think of the old adage about appearances sometimes being deceiving. This is both a theme that some of the scenarios posited within the novel return to again and again and a statement about the novel itself—a book that pivots from a catalog of strange phenomena into a story of bureaucratic intrigue with some shockingly visceral moments. It isn’t a book that ever feels predictable.

Eeeeeeeee — cover reveal! Korean author Un-su Kim first caught my attention in 2019 with his novel The Plotters, which is a darkly comedic novel about a young man who is raised to be an assassin. This excellent crime novel made a lot of lists that year, including “Editor’s Choice” from the New York Times Book Review and “9 New Books We Recommend This Week” at the New York Times. And I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It’s that smart mix of violent, touching, and funny, like Nick Harkaway or a Coen Brothers’ film.
